Play in Hospitals - Real Life Perspectives (Paperback): Nicky Everett, Cath Hubbuck, Fraser Brown Play in Hospitals - Real Life Perspectives (Paperback)
Nicky Everett, Cath Hubbuck, Fraser Brown
R1,126 Discovery Miles 11 260 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Exploring how practitioners make use of play's developmental benefits and therapeutic healing properties to aid the child's health care journey, this reflective book expands and enhances the knowledge base underlying the practice of play in hospitals. The work of health play specialists and child life specialists in hospitals in the UK and around the world requires a deep level of clinical knowledge, so that preparing children for procedures can be done with skill and precision. It builds on an understanding of both child development and the impact of traumatic experiences so that children's deepest fears and biggest emotions can be faced without flinching. It also relies on an acceptance that play is the foundation of everything - the child's safest, most natural space - and from this trust, strength and resilience can grow and be nurtured. This new edited text explores the breadth, depth and skills of these trained healthcare practitioners providing play for babies, children, young people and adults, and places the power of play squarely at the centre of most clinical settings. Its starting point of the theory that underpins practice is explored and developed through a combination of reflective essays, case study chapters from the UK and around the world, and the newly emerging use of play in diverse settings. Drawing on the collective work of over 30 play specialists, child life specialists, play service managers, lecturers and researchers, this book is unique in all it offers to paediatric practitioners and settings, in training and in practice. It is an important resource for healthcare play specialists, playworkers, children's nurses, occupational therapists and more.

Play and Playwork - Notes and Reflections in a Time of Austerity (Paperback): Fraser Brown, Mike Wragg Play and Playwork - Notes and Reflections in a Time of Austerity (Paperback)
Fraser Brown, Mike Wragg
R1,259 Discovery Miles 12 590 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Bringing together authors from a range of academic disciplines and research backgrounds - united as standard-bearers for the child's right to play - and set against a backdrop evoking play's critical essence, this book documents the rise and fall of an explosive period of political interest in play in the UK. Has the withdrawal of so much state funding damaged the playwork profession forever? Has the battle for recognition of the significance of play in child development been lost? Why is children's happiness always so low on the agendas of our politicians? The invaluable contributions in this book identify the lessons learned, and the opportunities that may be available to those determined to maintain the struggle for a greater recognition of the importance of children's play in an era defined by the oppressive politics of austerity. This book was originally published as a special issue of the International Journal of Play.

The construction of the A1 (M) Darrington to Dishforth DBFO road scheme has provided an important opportunity to investigate landscape development over time in parts of West and North Yorkshire. Over sixty archaeological sites were investigated in advance of and alongside the massive engineering works in one of the largest programmes of archaeological fieldwork seen in the UK. The results of the work will greatly enhance understanding of the archaeology of the magnesian limestone areas of West and North Yorkshire. The most significant results are presented here in this book funded by the Highways Agency as part of its commitment to the historic environment and dissemination of work undertaken on its behalf.

Play and Playwork: 101 Stories of Children Playing (Paperback, Ed): Fraser Brown Play and Playwork: 101 Stories of Children Playing (Paperback, Ed)
Fraser Brown
R838 Discovery Miles 8 380 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Children like to play. They get all sorts of benefits from playing. They get the most benefit from play when they are in control of what they are doing. Yet there are lots of circumstances today that mean children are not able to control their own play and that's where playwork comes in, where the role of the playworker is to create environments that enable children to take control of their playing. This book aims to explore the similarities, differences and tensions that exist between play and playwork including appropriate definitions and the conflict around the role of the adult. Fraser Brown proposes a play to playwork continuum, where playing can be considered a 'developmental and evolutionary' activity and playwork a 'compensatory' activity. Helpfully structured around the aspects considered by the author as most important for playwork, this book uses 101 fascinating stories of children playing to illuminate a range of play and playwork theories. The rich array of powerful stories - drawn from the casebooks of eminent and experienced playworkers - speak for themselves whilst at the same time triggering theoretical explorations that are interwoven with the stories in each chapter.Mesmerizing, absorbing and original, this is essential reading for playwork students and practitioners, as well as for students and practitioners of early years, childhood, children's health and wellbeing, and children's social care.

""[An] excellent book... With its breadth of discourse, it held my attention throughout. ... This book is informative, but also challenges views on the play experience and the playwork profession. It will be of interest to all those that work and play with young children. The place of playwork and playworkers... is described with passion: readers cannot help but be totally absorbed by this book." Early Years, Vol 24, No 1, March 2004"

Children learn and develop through their play. In today's world the opportunities for that to happen are increasingly restricted. The profession of playwork seeks to reintroduce such opportunities, and so enable children to achieve their full potential.
This book brings together many leading names in the playwork field, to produce a text that has something for everyone. The in-depth exploration of a range of theoretical perspectives will appeal to both playwork students and practising playworkers. Experienced practitioners offer sound practical advice about ways of improving playwork practice. There are chapters on the role of adventure playgrounds (past, present and future); the challenge of starting a playwork section in a local authority; and the value of networking. Contributors explore the essence of play; the historical roots of playwork; and the role of play cues in human and animal behaviour. There is an exploration of the astounding impact of a therapeutic playwork project on the development of a group of abandoned children in Romania. The final chapter reinforces the need for playworkers to be reflective practitioners in all aspects of their work.

The Priory of St Mary was moved from Runcorn to Norton in 1134 by William fitz William, third baron of Halton. Despite a major fire in 1236, Norton grew in size and stature to become an abbey in 1391, and its abbot was a senior and much respected member of the Augustinian Order. The abbey met its end in April 1536 under Henry VIII's dissolution of religious houses, and in 1545 the site was sold to the Brooke family, who adapted parts of the abbot's quarters, kitchens and west range to provide a comfortable family home. In the mid-eighteenth century, much of the house was demolished to make way for a fashionable classically inspired mansion, which was occupied until 1921 and finally demolished in 1928. In 1966, the site was presented to Runcorn Development Corporation by Sir Richard Brooke. Ground-breaking excavations began in 1970, running until 1987, and exposing much of the site for investigation. The principal excavator, J Patrick Greene, published an excellent synthesis of the site in 1989, but the full stratigraphy and finds from the project remained unpublished. This book, funded by English Heritage, and supported by the Norton Priory Museum Trust, seeks to redress this, with a full account of the results of the excavations. Its production by Oxford Archaeology North drew together a team of specialists from a wide range of disciplines.

Prehistoric Settlement in the Lower Kennet Valley (Paperback): Adam Brossler, Fraser Brown, Erika Guttman, Leo Webley Prehistoric Settlement in the Lower Kennet Valley (Paperback)

This volume presents the results of two excavations on the gravel terraces of the Lower Kennet Valley, at Green Park (Reading Business Park) Phase 3 and Moores Farm, Burghfield, Berkshire. The Green Park excavations uncovered a field system and occupation features dating to the middle to late Bronze Age. Five waterholes or wells were distributed across the field system, the waterlogged fills of which preserved wooden revetment structures and valuable environmental evidence. The pottery from the waterholes makes a significant contribution to our understanding of the middle to late Bronze Age transition in the region. Later activity included middle to late Iron Age boundaries, a late Iron Age cremation burial, a Romano-British field system and post-medieval trackways. The Moores Farm excavations revealed occupation from the Mesolithic, Neolithic, middle Bronze Age and early Iron Age. The middle Bronze Age settlement included pits, ovens and possible post structures, and was again situated within a contemporaneous field system dotted with waterholes. As well as discussing these two sites, the volume provides an overview of all of the work to date in the Green Park Farm/Reading Business Park area, exploring the development of this important prehistoric landscape.

Studying pharmacy was supposed to be Ann Brown's ticket to lots of money and living the good life - not to a remote mission hospital on the continent she swore never to even visit. But God had other plans. From a dysfunctional home in Australia to a youthful lark in London to life in politically torn South Africa, Ann takes us along on her journey of transformation. We meet the people she grew to love despite her racist beginnings. We see her stumble and sometimes fall, only to recommit her way to the God who invites people of all cultures into his family. You will laugh with her and feel her anger as she faces challenges from a house full of cockroaches to angry whites who want to eject her and a group of African orphans from the beach.

"Rethinking Children's Play" examines attitudes towards, and experiences of, children's play. Fraser Brown and Michael Patte draw on a wide range of thought, research and practice from different fields and countries to debate, challenge and re-appraise long held beliefs, attitudes and ways of working and living with children in the play environment.Children need to play and the benefits of play are many and varied, but they are too often underestimated by parents, educators, politicians and society in general. The authors apply a playwork perspective to a wide range of settings populated by children, both formal and informal, to explore the idea that children's learning and development derives substantially from their opportunities to engage with a rich play environment that is supportive of the play process.Thoughts are provoked through examples of research, reflections on research, activities, key points and guidance on further reading."Rethinking Children's Play" is essential for all those studying childhood at undergraduate and graduate level and of great interest to those working with children in any field.

Fraser Brown, Bob Hughes; Introduction by Bob Hughes; Foreword by Jim Johnson; Contributions by Sarah Wilson, …
R1,383 Discovery Miles 13 830 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The postwar years in the UK saw the development of numerous artificial playgrounds intended to compensate children for increasing urbanization and a lack of wild places to play. Many of these sites employed playleaders, whose job was to use play to instill social behavioral norms on children, using games with rules and organized activities. From the early 1970s, that approach began to be replaced by playwork, a nondirective way of working. Playwork marked a rejection of the adult-focused practice of playleadership. Playworkers relied more on an ambiance that reflected their own childhood freedoms and on the growing body of knowledge regarding the importance of play. This body of new literature suggested that play, unadulterated by societal objectives, was crucial to the successful development of all children; that play was not just good for exercise and social interaction, but was vital to brain growth and the child's ability to adapt to a fast changing world. Since those early days, playwork has mutated through a variety of guises, and over the years has begun to explore the child's impact on space, the relationships between child and adult, what playworkers do, the therapeutic aspects of play, and has even taken faltering footsteps into the complexities of the quantum world. Aspects of Playwork reflects this awesome diversity of views and interpretation, moving from the historical to the almost sci-fi and from ghostly traces to the hard realities of being a child and working with children in the 2000s. Most of all, though, Aspects of Playwork is a commentary on the beauty and wonder of what play is and what it is to play.

The construction of the Asselby to Pannal natural gas pipeline has provided an important opportunity to investigate the early landscapes of North and West Yorkshire. A combination of non-intrusive and intrusive archaeological techniques has been employed, over a five-year period by Oxford Archaeology North and Network Archaeology Ltd, in order to explore the archaeology along the pipeline. The archaeological investigation included the large-scale excavation of 14 archaeological sites, and 136 evaluation trenches. The results of this work will greatly enhance understanding of the archaeology of the southern part of the Vale of York, the Magnesian Limestone areas of North and West Yorkshire, and the eastern margins of the Pennine uplands. Within these distinct landscapes, evidence for early prehistoric through to post-medieval period activity was discovered. However, the majority of excavated remains date to the Iron Age and Roman period, and relate to the creation of field systems and schemes of land division, as well as settlements and enclosures. In addition, parts of the South Dyke and Becca Banks, which form elements of the Aberford Dykes complex, were examined, and this has provided fresh insights into the chronology and use of these important monuments. The volume arises from a multi-disciplinary approach to the archaeology, with the emphasis placed on interpreting the sites within their wider landscape context. It includes the work of a range of authors, drawn from Oxford Archaeology and Network Archaeology Ltd, and also several external specialists.
